Sit on MySpace!

Filed under: Social Media, Web Design — spiderwebdesign @ 20:18

Who remembers Myspace? Does anyone even use it these days? I must confess that I really used to enjoy Myspace – I preferred it much more than Facebook in fact.

The main reason for this, was that it allowed users to edit the html/css – so in effect, everyone’s profile became a personal website of sorts. The downside of this was that some people made some shocking pages, complete with dancing bananas and tinny annoying music (but no one should hold this again me – I had to learn to code somewhere).

Another dodgy issue was the way in which teenage girls used to flaunt themselves, posing for profile pictures in their underwear etcetera – but is this really a negative point? I suppose I’ve always had a dodgy outlook in some respects…

I’ve recently enjoyed using Facebook more than I ever did, and this is because of the new timeline layout and features – especially the timeline covers – all of which are akin to Myspace in my humble opinion.

Another reason for being a a fan of Myspace, was that it was public and it  encouraged it’s users to make friends. This is the total opposite of Facebook, which is private and aloof in it’s approach to social networking, although remains a popularity, nonetheless. The privacy of Facebook is probably reassuring to the parents of them teenage girls, mind; especially with people like me lurking about!

Another great thing about Myspace was the way in which it enabled bands, artists and tattooists to build up a fanbase and interact with them directly. Public sharing was commonplace, which I think is no bad thing.

For anyone who’s interested, here my Myspace profile (which I’ve always kept, just for posterity): www.myspace.com/spiderwebdezign

And while we’re at it, here’s my Bebo too: http://bit.ly/Kmz2gX

13 Diamonds Tattoo – New Website

I recently designed the website for a new tattoo studio that that opened last week in Soho – 13 Diamonds.

It’s very minimal, nothing fancy – and has wordpress at the back. I had to create the logo and navigation from some sketches the client gave me, and I also had to design some flyers and business cards etc.

Check it out: www.13diamonds.com

Old Skull 4 Ever

I set up a new wordpress account for someone today – www.oldskull4ever.wordpress.com

They opted for a free account, so I customised it as best I could. The blog is to accompany www.oldskull4ever.com (which I didn’t design).

They sell “dirty apparel for rockers and she-devils” – well worth a look!

New Blog – Spider Web Design

So I’ve been having problems with my hosting company. The redirects I’ve set up only seem to work when they want to. My sub-domains hardly ever work (blog.tomfogarty.com, archive.tomfogarty.com). And now I’ve found out I’m nearly out of space.

This is a pain in the arse because I’m  regular blogger at the moment, and I like to upload pictures.

My hosting company is French by the way, making communication with them almost impossible. I can’t remember why I decided it would be a good idea to opt for a French-speaking web hosting company. I was probably drunk at the time.

I will probably switch hosts at some point soon, but it’s somewhere down on a very long “to do” list. Somewhere behind “Natalie Imbruglia”.

What I’ve decided to do is this: I’ve set up a new blog: www.spiderwebdezign.com/blog

I will use this to blog about the current projects I am working on – web design, web development, photography, art etcetera – and the bulk of my photos will be uploaded there. As that blog is tied to my “professional” website (www.spiderwebdezign.com), I will try to be sensible and keep the nonsense down to a minimum.

I will continue to post my stupid stories, rants and rambles on this blog. Any pictures I do upload here (homemade tattoo misadventures, embarrassing drunken pub jaunts etcetera) – I can host on Flickr or Picasa and hotlink to them.

Old Sites, Old Friends… New Starts

Filed under: Announcements, Funny Stories, Web Design — Tags: , , , — spiderwebdesign @ 23:41

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, I made a website. I also used to write and draw stuff, until I got lazy and stopped, and started to drift through life. This was 11 years ago to be exact. And in that time I forget that I ever built that first website (even though today I earn my living – in part – from web design).

Recently, someone reminded me of this, and sent me the link to that first website – which actually still exists out there on the interweb. I found this very amusing (and I must admit, a little touching), and so I share the link with you:

http://www.angelfire.com/freak/nunheadmorgue

It’s interesting  to note, that 11-years later, and at the age of 30 – my sense of humour, writing ability and web design skillset – has not changed or improved one iota.

Around the time that I made the website – I made friends with someone online – and it was they who sent me the link recently. In the years that have passed since then, we’ve stayed in touch – both online and via text – although we never actually met. Sometimes there were lengthy gaps in contact – this was due to me; I’m bad at staying in contact and I often disappear from the internet for periods of time… But we’ve always got back in touch sooner or later.

Even so, I always felt that we shared a sense of humour and that we would get on well in real life. Today we met up for the first time.

I’m pleased to say that for me, I really enjoyed the day and I had a lot of fun; I felt like I’d known them for years. And in a way, I had. It’s a shame it was due to sad circumstances that prompted us to finally meet – but it’s funny how life works out sometimes. The person is going through a difficult at the moment, so I’d like to help them through it however I can. I really hope we get to meet up again soon.

While I’m on this bent, recently I’ve been meeting up with someone from primary school that I hadn’t seen for probably 12+ years. We get on like a house on fire, and there’s a lot of laughs when we see each other  today.

The same thing happened with a mate from secondary school – we lost contact when we went off to university – and didn’t contact each other until a couple of years ago. Again, same story; when we met up again we continued where we left off and we still laugh and joke about the same things today.

To tie this back up with the website I made all that time ago – I guess some blokes grow up, and others don’t. I’m not saying I’m totally immature, and I don’t crank up Young at Heart by The Bluebells on a daily basis (honest!), but I’m glad I’m not quite passed it yet, and can still make time for friends.

The people mentioned here all read this blog – they know who they are – so this one goes out to them.

Peace out (and I hope you enjoyed the website).

Site updates – share & follow links

I’ve been a bit busy lately, so I’ve neglected this blog somewhat – but I am going to try and catch up over the next couple of days.

I’ve introduced some new features:

There is a list of the social networking sites I use (facebook, linkedin, myspace, twitter etc) over on the right-hand side – please feel free to follow me/add me.

Each blog post now has share links for facebook, twitter et al – please share any blog posts that you enjoy – thanks!

I’ve also added a facebook “like button” – please use that if you like any of my posts, cheers.

These updates were made really easy using the wordpress follow and share plugin – really easy to use and set up so check it out.

Future updates:

The link colour on this site has really started to annoy me – the green colour doesn’t really work – so I’ll be changing that pronto.

I also want to sort out the photos section so that the thumbnails link to larger versions.

I also need to sort out the CSS for Internet Explorer users..

Thanks for your patience – feedback always welcome.

New Rotating Flash Galleries on Site

I’ve got quite a few blog-worthy things to post about in the next few days; been to a couple of art exhibitions (Paul Gauguin & Russian Criminal Tattoo Exhibit), cinema etc. And tonight I’m going to see a John Landis double-bill at The Prince Charles Cinema (An American Werewolf in London & Animal House).

In the meantime here are some recent website improvements:

Each section now has a rotating flash gallery (all except resumé section). I’ll be updating the actual pictures later this week, but at least it’s working for now!

In the blog section – I’ve added a list of recent posts, and also a list of popular posts (although for some reason they seem to point to the old external version of the blog…). All to be fixed soon… honest!

Thanks for reading :)

Is Google AdWords Any Good?

Filed under: Help?, How To, SEO, Web Design, Web Development — Tags: , , — spiderwebdesign @ 16:23

Just £75 of free Google AdWords vouchers in the post. I thought I might as well give it a try… but is it actually any good?

I do a little bit of freelance web design/web development in my spare time – so I don’t want to be flooded with work. I’d also like to focus on the London area (for now).

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to best use the £75?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

TomFOGARTY.com – Site Updates

Filed under: Announcements, Random, Web Design, Web Development — Tags: , — spiderwebdesign @ 22:55

Nothing too exciting, but I do like to report the latest site updates, yo.

Left-hand menu bar. This was driving me up the wall, rendering differently in different browsers and operating systems. Tinkered with the CSS and now it looks the same in all platforms (well the ones I’ve tested anyway).

Photos Section. Added an extra row of photos to both the Flicrk and Picasa feeds. The Picasa feed still buggers up sometimes in Internet Explorer, not sure why yet – still trying to get to the bottom of it..

Blog Sidebar (right-hand side). Aligned the links with the titles and adding some spacing between the main content and the sidebar. Looks neater now. Still needs some adjusting though I think.

Added some photos from the Joana and The Wolf gig to this blog post (borrowed from Paul Shinn: lookwhatidrawed.blogspot.com).

Joana and The Wolf

Went to see Joana and The Wolf yesterday with my friend Paul. It was at Club Ugly @ The Social (just off Oxford Street).

They are a really cool band and it was a fun evening. They were supported by a band called Gilbert who were also quite interesting.

Their music is a bit punky/electronic and the lyrics are quite dark, which I like. I first saw them playing at The Curzon Cinema in Soho 2 years ago and I’ve been a firm fan ever since (it was An American Werewolf in London on at the cinema that night..).

I’m also re-designing their website for them at the moment – coming soon!

In the meantime check out their songs on MySpace:

And here is Gilbert’s page (if you care):

Here be Photos!

This is Gilbert, quite a fun band – wouldn’t mind seeing them again. Wahoola!

Joana and The Wolf…

Me. Looking like a “special kid” on Jim’ll Fix It. Or maybe just drunk.
